In the ever-changing world of critical care science, we are progressively recognising the importance of the Precision Medicine paradigm. The quest for better prevention and treatment methods necessitates appreciation of the heterogeneity of individual patients specifically in terms of their unique risk factors that predispose to disease or influence the likelihood of poor outcomes. The meeting will focus on current concepts in critical care and how best the multidisciplinary critical care team can select the most appropriate investigations, monitoring strategies and therapies in a cost-effective manner.

International experts including Mervyn Singer, Jukka Takala, Kathryn Maitland, Zsolt Molnar, Can Ince, Gavin Joynt and Jason Roberts, supported by our national talent will address key practical, controversial as well as tomorrow’s issues in critical care in the form of plenary lectures, round table meetings, debates and original research presentations.

The scientific programme will include:

Landmark publications from 2017
The applicability of novel therapies and new devices that have become available in SA
Critical Care in the Private sector
Ethical and medico-legal considerations in critical care including the protection of patient privacy and data confidentiality
A multitude of Pre-Congress workshops
