NNIA invites nominations from the Southern and Eastern Africa Region (SEAR) for the NNIA Scientific Awards in Nutrition.
Aim:
These Awards are intended for medical doctors, dietitians, nutrition scientists or paramedical personnel, who have made significant academic, service or research contributions in nutrition. These Awards are intended to:
- Acknowledge excellence in nutrition.
- Encourage and focus on development in nutrition in the SEAR.
- Facilitate communication among scientists in the field.
- Facilitate the dissemination of recent developments in the field.
- Make the NNIA and its objectives known to the nutrition and medical community.
At present, only residents of the following countries are eligible for these NNIA Awards:

Awards:
Four Awards have been established:
Award for best scientific publication:
This Award will be bestowed on the author/group of authors who published the best publication in nutrition in the peer reviewed literature during the year preceding the Award. The Award has a monetary value of R 10 000,00 and will be awarded annually.
Award for major contribution to community nutrition:
This Award will be bestowed on the health professional, whose achievement(s) in the field has contributed significantly and meaningfully to the knowledge and practice of community nutrition during the year preceding the Award. The Award has a monetary value of R 10 000,00 and will be awarded annually.
Award for major contribution to clinical nutrition:
This Award will be bestowed to the health professional, whose achievement(s) in the field has contributed significantly and meaningfully to the knowledge and practice of clinical nutrition during the year preceding the Award. The Award has a monetary value of R 10 000,00 and will be awarded annually.
Award for continued and sustained contribution to nutrition:
This Award will be bestowed to the health professional, whose achievements in the field has been widely recognized on a continuing basis to have contributed significantly and meaningfully to the knowledge, practice and growth of nutrition during the five years preceding the Award. The Award has a monetary value of R 50 000,00 and will be awarded every five years.
Nomination Procedure:
All nominations should be submitted with sufficient detail so as to enable the thorough assessment thereof. The written application should be presented under the following headings:
- An updated Curriculum Vitae of the proposer.
- An updated Curriculum Vitae of the nominee.
- Details regarding the nominee's publication and/or achievement(s), which should not exceed 2500 words.
- Secondment of the nomination by a peer(s) of the nominee.
- A signed declaration by the nominee of the acceptance of the Award, should the Award be bestowed on the nominee.
NNIA Assessment of Nominations:
A Panel of members of the NNIA's Scientific and Advisory Board (SAB) with the relevant expertise in a given field, together with, when appropriate, co-opted established scientists in the relevant field of nomination will assess all nominations. Nominees will be notified of the Panel's decision by letter from the Chairman of the NNIA's SAB.
The decision of the Panel will be final.
Exclusions:
The NNIA will not accept nominations which:
- Come from countries other than the ones mentioned herein.
- Are based on work completed outside of the parent country.
Nomination Dates:
Closing date for submission of applications to the NNIA Coordinator is 31st December of each year.
