Dr
Nelia Steyn (MPH-UCT and PhD-US) has been active in the field
of nutrition research since 1980. Her areas of research are
related to the field of chronic diseases of lifestyle, particularly
type 2 diabetes, obesity and other issues relating to a healthy
lifestyle. She also has extensive teaching and community related
nutrition experience after working for the Department of Health
for 10 years and for 10 years as head and Professor of the
Department of Human Nutrition at the University of the North
(UNIN). She currently serves on the board of SAPEN and is
a member of numerous other committees, including Chair Person
of the Eduction Committee of the Board for Dietitians of the
Health Professionals Council. She has in the past also served
as a council member of the Nutrition Society. Dr Steyn has
published more than 70 peer reviewed articles and 28 additional
publications including book chapters. Her research findings
have been presented at 62 conferences, of which 12 were international.
She currently serves as a board member of Public Health Nutrition,
The South African Journal of Clinical Nutrition and Nutrition.
Dr Steyn is a regular reviewer for the SA Journal of Clinical
Nutrition, Science, Public Health Nutrition and the Scandinavian
Journal of Public Health. Additionally, she is a regular reviewer
on proposal evaluations for the National Research Foundation
in South Africa (NRF) and for the Medical Research Council
(MRC). Dr Steyn has had 16 postgraduate students over the
past 15 years, of which 3 have been PhD students. Most of
these postgraduate students have been from a historically
disadvantaged background She has also been actively involved
in programs building research capacity in disadvantaged students,
both as a participant in the intern program at the MRC and
as the director of Research Development at the UNIN. Some
highlights in her career include: William Fox reward for the
best research presented by a dietitian at a local conference.
Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences at UNIN. Rating
received from the NRF. Development and implementation of a
dietetics degree program at UNIN. Vice Chairperson of the
Professional Board for Dietitians
