New Year's Message

Better late than never!  I would like to wish all SASPEN members a happy and prosperous 2014.  I wish you courage and strength to meet all the challenges the New Year brings. May the best of 2013 be the worst of 2014!  I was waiting for some really good news before sending out this message – and it is now confirmed…..

I would like to start with an apology. There was a SASPEN membership renewal form in the last SAJCN. This was not requested or edited by SASPEN and consequently the 2013 form was utilized by SAJCN. Please disregard the form.  The online membership renewal has also been full of problems.  It is a programming problem, which seems to be solved now.

The SASPEN Council has been hard at work planning some exciting things for 2014. One of the major goals of the SASPEN Council is education, including setting up our own guidelines and developing education modules. However, such a mammoth task is currently not possible with the limited financial and human resources. We thus explored other options to bring learning opportunities to our members.

We have decided to obtain a Block Membership from ESPEN. The Council decided to carry the costs of enrolling the council members as the first block. This has just been approved by ESPEN and the council members are now ESPEN block members.  This will enable us to make use of ESPEN resources such as LLL courses and the SASPEN President gets a seat on the ESPEN board. We would like to extend an invitation to all SASPEN members to make use of this opportunity. A block membership requires 10 people at a cost of €800, thus €80 per person. For people under the age of 32 years, the fee is €30 per person, and they will make up a separate block. If you are interested, please send your contact details to the SASPEN secretary, Christina Nieuwoudt. When we have 10 people, we will contact you for additional details and payment.

The ESPEN member privileges include:

  • 20% discount on registration at the main annual congress in the field, i.e. The ESPEN Congress on Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism.
  • a free online subscription to the best European journal in clinical nutrition and metabolism through, i.e. Clinical Nutrition.

Please note: User ID and Password on the ELSEVIER site itself, is an extended service from ELSEVIER!

Members will also receive the printed version of the entire subscription year. That means, no matter what month you register for ESPEN membership, you will receive all journal's Vol. of your subscription year.

  • reduced rates for the LLL Live Modules – these courses aim at a certificate in clinical nutrition and/or becoming a teacher in clinical nutrition in your own country
  • the ESPEN Newsletter
  • access to with same username and password
  • access to the archived educational Congress Presentation database since 2001
  • access to research grants
  • access to the ESPEN young investigator awards
  • access to travel fellowships for communications at the annual congress
  • the best way to be part of an organized action to promote recognition of clinical nutrition

Since there will not be a SASPEN congress this year, we decided to do a road show in the second half of the year, entitled "Back to basics". We plan to visit all the provinces and we will keep you posted with all the developments.

The nursing enteral nutrition course and logistics is in the final planning stages. If you would like SASPEN to present the course at your institution, please contact us.  We are in the process of obtaining permission from 3 private hospital groups to present at their institutions.

We are also working on taking SASPEN into the 21st century...... but you will have to wait for the next news letter to hear more.

I would like to again invite all SASPEN members to inform us if you want to be involved in sub-committees, would like to present at events, write case studies or have new ideas to please contact any of the Council members. Please send us references of new articles that you think is relevant, links to websites with useful information, education opportunities and summaries of congresses that you attended.
